Hi there,
I would like to replace my existing ASUS 1300UHP router. My existing broadband plan is Unifi 500Mb. My house size is around 3500 sqft single storey including the porch and backyard which I would like wifi coverage. Should I consider AC86U, AC5300 or go for mesh Orbi RBK40? I read in a couple forums that in case of a power trip, Orbi will need to perform the manual setup to regain internet access again. Is that true?
Thank you.
3500 is huge and I definitely recommend going for a mesh WiFi. You can consider mesh WiFi from other brands. The Deco M9 Plus from TP-Link is a good choice.
Just found this awesome informative website when looking for a solution. Definitely bookmarked. @Alvyn, regarding Huawei E5186s-22a (Tele2), the telephone port is not working. I have suggested this model to my friend but didn’t realize this issue. Is there anyway to unlock it through firmware flashing? I felt guilty not researching more deeply before my friend purchased it 🙁
RT-AC86U is suitable for which UniFi plan 500 or 800
It is a perfect router for 800Mbps.
Hi Alvyn Great website and has been really informative and helpful to get the right router and getting it configured for Unifi. I would like to enquire something if its not too much of a trouble. My contractor have installed a CAT6 cable for telephone and network cable which extends from the spot where the TM Fiber Wall Socket and patchcord is installed to where my tv cabinet is located – this was to setup the hypptv point. Can this LAN point be used to access the internet by connecting any other device? If yes, would it be possible to… Read more »
Based on your explanation, this LAN point should be used to connect the WIFi router,
I am staying in double storey terrace house and currently using Asus RT-AC1200G+ for 2 years+. I had a bad experience with TP Link Repeater (RE200) as there are some deadspots in my house Reason being 1. instable connection 2. somehow the repeater interfere with the original wifi signal (eg. status may indicate that my device is connected to to the router SSID but through the repeater. I found out after i tried connecting to the web interface: 192.168.x.x) This experience causes me to have a dilemma to go for Wireless Mesh. However I’m also skeptical about new router like… Read more »
If you are facing dead spots, it means your property is rather big. Maybe mesh is more suitable and I recommend ASUS RT-AC67U .
Dear Alvyn,
I am currently use TP wifi extender RE650 (located ground floor) with my Archer C9 router (installed first floor) . Coverage has increased tremendously in terms of 1F and GF.
However I face issues with the mobile devices not automatically connecting to the strongest wifi signal as they move between the two different SSID.
Would a MESH setup from TP or Asus help for the mobile devices wifi speed And are the mesh compatible to setup the HyppTV?
Thanks and Appreciate your help to recommend.
Rgds
Philip
Yup, this is the biggest problem with range extender as they run a different network. Mesh WiFI system can solve this.
Hello admin. I see you do/share nice review in Malaysia :)..
As you has tested both of the router that in my list..
I would like to know which one is better/suggested
ASUS RT-AC1200G+ or ASUS RT-AC55UHP.. Since both of them nearly same price..
Primary Aim: Stable, Fast
Space: Small apartment
Usage: LAN FTP (Samba &etc), 5GHz WiFi for mobile gaming
Thank you
I recommend increasing the budget and get RT-AC58U instead. RT-AC1200G+ is too entry level at this point.
Hi Alvyn,
I find your website very useful and would like to reach out to you for a collaboration idea. Can we take this conversation via email, over the phone or even in person perhaps? Do let me know. Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Hi Alvyn,
Would you by any chance know of anyone who assist to setup/install router? Have issues setting up Lyra Trio. Managed to get 1 node to work but one node now has gone into rescue mode and cant get the other node to pair. Rather get a pro-in to set it up fully along with VPN and Qos. Any recommendation would be appreciated.
Drop me an Email and I will see if I can help. blacktubi [alias] gmail
Hi Sifoo Alvyn
Need opinion to set up wireless network to full cover 3 storey semi D ( 4000 + sqft – 60% house using glass for wall ) .Suggestion & advise for hardware ( router / AP /extender )& diagram LAN cable for every floor? Package 500mbps Unifi. Thanks
Is this a completed home?
I have unifi turbo 500gb now and planning to get Deco M9 plus.
what is the wifi speed range i can expect around the house for phone and HP laptop?
Thanks
It depends on the wireless ability of your HP laptop but you should be able to get at least 100Mbps everywhere.
Hi, I would like to make a suggestion that will be an improvement for the router test results. PPPoE WAN speed test results. I mean use your own PPPoE server and then test the router throughput through the PPPoE connection. You can’t find such info on the web reviews & even if it did include it, that is usually just simply the result of the reviewer testing on their own broadband & speed limited by their broadband package. Most of the time you can only get a hint of the actual performance reported by the actual users with varying accuracy.… Read more »
I actually manage to simulate a TM environment with VLAN and PPPOE but I decided that it is too technical for the consumption of most readers. Thanks for the suggestion anyway.
I am getting a 1Gbps internet connection and will be able to perform more accurate test soon.
