Unifi Router Buyer's Guide in 2021
If you use Unifi at your home, you are probably not so happy with the speed and stability of the WiFi network. That’s because TM is still a business and they cannot give an expensive router while remain profitable. But, luckily, TM doesn’t stop you from buying your own router.
While the router provided by TM isn’t too bad, they have slower CPU and weaker WiFi coverage. This means they aren’t very good if you stay in a bigger home or if you have more WiFi devices at home. Thus, in this article, I will show you some WiFi routers that I’ve tested that will recommend for you to upgrade your home WiFi router.

Once you got everything ready, remove your old wireless router and connect the new router to the ONU. You have to reconfigure your new wireless router. The process depends on the brand of the router but generally, you just need to insert the PPPOE ID and password and select the Unifi profile on the router.

D-Link Unifi Router
You probably heard of D-Link before as they are one of the oldest brand selling networking gear in Malaysia. They also produce some really great networking equipment. New D-Link routers are fully compatible with Unifi. They are also rather affordable while delivering good performance.
You can refer to my guide on how to setup D-Link Unifi router here.
Other Brands (Tenda, Netgear and etc)
There are also other brands in the market and most if not all Enterprise level gear can be configured to support Unifi. But, we do not include them in this list as they may be harder to configure for most users.
Netgear is known for requiring manual setup of VLAN for it to work with Unifi.
Hi Tubi,
i’m planning to get this Asus RT-AC55UHP. Any recommended place can get it? in KL or Subang or PJ area?
Any computer shop is fine
All this model that you post can support 30mbps unifi ?
All models support 30Mbps Unifi but the thing is how good the wireless capability to sustain the performance. Normally more expensive model can sustain the 30Mbps speed even at low signal.
hi blacktubi, can i get a rounter from taobao?it china rounter(dlink/tplink)support unifi?
It won’t work with Unifi unless it comes with Unifi ability.
I’m using unifi 30 mbps. I live in a 2 stores house filled with dead spots in terms of wifi. Which router would u recommend that’s within a rm 400-600. I wish to have openVPN client / server for making connections to your home network from at work or on the road. Company is using hardware firewall to block some URL and ports. Almost try all free VPN is not working.
I recommend the Asus RT-AC55UHP. The signal strength is good and it comes with an OpenVPN server. However, do note that most office firewall block VPN protocol as well.
Hi sir does RT-N14UHP support hypptv? And do u recommand it for 30mbps unifi subscriber? Thanks.
Yes, it is a fine router for 30Mbps. However, get something with Wireless AC if you can afford.
My budget around 400-500 so what do u recommend to me? Bcause right now im using stock unifi router and i only cn get 5-10mbps out of 30mbps and my house only single storey.
I recommend the Asus RT-AC55UHP. It may be over your budget but it is a really good router.
Hi sir, i already bought RT-AC55UHP like u recommend to me and setup it. But the problem now my 5GHz cn connect only with 1 device which is my phone. How cn i enable it to connect to other device thats mean connect more than 1 device? Thanks
You have to make sure your other devices support 5Ghz.
Recommend me best router for 2 storey house, unifi 30, budget below rm300 thanks
Asus RT-N14UHP is a fine choice.
Hi there sir, my current 30mb Unifi router is D-Link DIR-615, I plan to have my own custom router to boost the speed. Based on your list and my research I finally come down to 2 choices, Asus RT-AC55UHP and TP-Link Archer C7. Based on what I research, Asus is more expensive and offer less power than TP-Link. My mind is going for TP-Link, but what is your opinion between these 2 products? Also, I plan to change my PCI-E wifi adapter to Asus RT-AC55UHP or TP-Link Archer T8E, again Asus is more expensive, any opinion to these too? I… Read more »
I will go for RT-AC55UHP. Despite the better specification on the Archer C7, the Asus comes with more feature. Not to mention better Unifi compatibility on the Asus.
Hi, I have bought a dlink 816L recently. I have a problem to install it or replacing the current one from Huawei,
I think I am not the only one after check this issue out in Low Yat Forum.
I am using unifi at home. from the user guide, it is quite simple.
actually, I can hook up the wifi connect but no connection to the internet.
so the connection to internet is not available even key in the password given by Unifi.
They have insisted nothing wrong with the password.
Please help.
Hi, you should not replace the Huawei. The Huawei is the ONU or modem. You can only replace the router.
Hey man appreciate the reply !! Last inquiry, which router would you recommend that has a good coverage and signal strength for a big house that has plenty of rooms with dead wifi zones and different phase on each floor(3storey house). you recommended the RT-N14UHP but are there other routers that could justify my problem so I can compare routers !
If budget is not an issue, definitely consider the RT-AC5300. The wireless range of that monster is absolutely amazing.
Hey man I find your website really really helpful ! Btw I’m using unifi 30 mbps. I live in a 3 stores house THTS filled with dead spots in terms of wifi. Which router would u recommend that’s within a rm 250- 300
Instead of 1 router, get a few powerline wireless extender. If your budget only allow you to get a router, RT-N14UHP is a good choice.
I bought 2 wireless extender (tp-link). It works at times but there are times my connection gets really unstable. I get the wifi but no internet. I would have to off my router n pair it again with the extender which is very frustrating. I’ve also bought a powerline adapter but doesn’t seem to work when I use it on the 2nd floor or 3rd floor. I think my electrical wiring system at home is different on each phase that’s what my techi friend reckoned to me. Would appreciate any solutions to my current dilemma !!
Typical wireless repeaters are subjected to stability issue. You friend is right, powerline do not work cross phase. I think you have to resort for manual Ethernet wiring to the wireless routers on each floor.
Please recommend a router that support NAT loopback.
I not sure about D-Link and TP-LINK but Asus routers support NAT loopback. I cannot verify the implementation anyway.
Please recommend router less price and better signal on wireless.. presently.. i’m using 5Mbps standard router and i also need hypptv function
Get any TP-LINK your budget allow.
